The three of them were born with the fourth Kazekage as their father and his wife, who died during childbirth with Gaara, their last child. Temari was born, then Kankuro, then Gaara, all being a year apart from one another. Temari was 2 when Gaara was born anyways, when their mother died she cursed Sunagakureno Sato for her death and gave Gaara the name Gaara, meaning a demon who loves one self.
She wanted Gaara to carry out her hatred towards the village. Well after their mother life, the whole family, their father, Temari, Kankuro and their uncle had a grudge against Gaara. Their father used Gaara as a tool, since he was one the one that orders the Raccoon demon sealed inside his son. Anyways at the age of 6 Gaara was very depressed and confused. He couldn't feel any pain or get hurt because the sand protected him.
Well that's when his father decided that Gaara was a lost cause and sent his uncle to kill Gaara; he failed since Gaara finally learned how to master the sand. As he was dying he told Gaara, about his mother and how he'll never be loved.

Then he said "Now please die" and set forth the bombs he had sent on himself. Of course Gaara didn't die, but after that he used the sand to tattoo the kanji symbol for love on his forehead. Then life went on, and we meet the three for the chuunin exams, Temari is 15 using Wind Jutsus, Kankuro is 14 and using his puppets, and Gaara is 13 and using the Sand. The three are more powerful then genins and could easily be Chuunins or even at the Jounin level.
Anyways since really they are in Konoha to attack the village due to the fact their father and Oro-sama and the sound all disliked the leaf because the Warlord of the Wind country (Where the sand is) was pulling money out of the village and giving in to the Leaf they were becoming angry. That's why the attack was planned. As you can see it mostly worked.
The three along with their sensei Baki escaped back to Sunagakure and then we see them again when they save Shikamaru's part during the Sasuke Retrieval act, where Kiba is saved from his attacker in the sound 5 by Kankuro, Lee by Gaara and then Shikamaru by Temari.
They leave once again but keep appearing back and forth, then last time and were the manga is right now the Akatsuki attacked Gaara who is now the 5th Kazekage, Kankuro and Temari are both Jounins and removed his demon causing Gaara’s death, then one of the Med nins from Konoha brings him back by using her own life.
